How to Check a Batch of Listing Photos Before a Bulk Upload

Uploading one listing, you find out fast if the photo's wrong. Uploading fifty, a single bad export or a reused template can fail across every SKU and bury the cause in a processing report. A five-minute pre-flight prevents almost all of it.

Why batches fail differently

Individual photos fail for individual reasons. Batches fail for systemic reasons: one export preset with the quality slider too low, one background-removal action applied to the whole folder that left a 2px halo, one template PSD whose canvas is 900px, a folder that got saved as WebP. When the cause is systemic, every affected SKU throws the same error, and fixing them one by one is the slow way out.

Step 1 — Standardise the export, once

Decide the recipe and apply it to everything:

Step 2 — Name files so a failure is traceable

Use the product identifier and the image role: B0XXXXXXXX.MAIN.jpg, B0XXXXXXXX.PT01.jpg. When the processing report says a row failed, you can find the exact file in seconds instead of opening thumbnails. For flat-file image feeds Amazon expects the identifier-dot-extension form anyway (see Amazon flat-file image errors).

Step 3 — Sort main images from secondary images

The rules are not the same. Amazon's strict standard — pure white, 85% fill, no text — applies to the main image only; secondary images can be lifestyle, infographic, or coloured. Put your main images in one folder and check them hard. Check secondary images mainly for size and format.

Step 4 — Batch-check against the right marketplace

Open the checker, pick the marketplace you're uploading to, and drop in a group of main images. For each card, scan:

Fix the systemic cause at the source (the export preset, the crop action, the template), re-export the whole batch, and re-check. Don't hand-patch fifty files.

Step 5 — Spot-check, then submit

Once a full group comes back green, spot-check 3–5 files at 100% zoom for haloed cut-outs, banding on the white, or a stray watermark the heuristics didn't catch. Then build the feed, host images on direct public URLs, and — after submitting — read the processing report row by row rather than assuming success.

A reusable checklist

  1. One export recipe: JPEG, sRGB, square, 1600–2000px, quality 80–90%.
  2. Filenames = identifier + role.
  3. Main images and secondary images in separate folders.
  4. Batch-check main images against the target marketplace; look for clusters of the same failure.
  5. Fix systemic causes at the source; re-export the batch.
  6. Spot-check at 100%; submit; read the report.

Frequently asked questions

How many images can I check at once?

Up to 20 per run in the tool. For a larger catalogue, work in groups — the point is to catch the systemic failure, and that shows up in the first group or two.

Do I need to check secondary images as thoroughly as main images?

No. Secondary images mostly need to clear size and format. The strict background, fill, and no-text rules are a main-image concern (on Amazon especially).

The batch passed here but some rows still failed at the marketplace. Why?
