Rule changes
Marketplaces change their image requirements without announcing it, and we sometimes get them wrong. This page lists every change to the rules ListingLint checks, with the date and the official page we checked. If you spot a rule that has changed, tell us.
31 October 2026 — full re-check against official pages
We re-read Amazon's, eBay's and Etsy's public help pages and corrected the checker and every guide.
Amazon
- Minimum size corrected: images under 500px on the longest side can't be uploaded; 1,000px+ is recommended and enables zoom. We previously treated 1,000px as the minimum, so 500–999px images now get a warning instead of a fail.
- No more "enlarge" fix: Amazon asks sellers not to artificially enlarge small images, so we removed the resize button.
- Maximum size added: 10,000px on the longest side.
- File types: JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF; WebP isn't listed, so the checker flags it.
- Source: Amazon Product image guide
Etsy
- Square-thumbnail advice withdrawn: Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape shapes and recommends a landscape or square first photo. We had wrongly told sellers to upload square images.
- Sizes corrected: 2000px+ width and height recommended; a first photo under 635px may show lower in search. Our earlier 1,000px "minimum" wasn't from Etsy.
- Added: transparent PNGs show black on Etsy; WebP isn't supported; files over 1MB may not finish uploading; listings need at least one unedited photo of the real item; up to 20 photos per listing (we said ten).

eBay
- Corrected: up to 24 photos per listing (we said 12); WebP, HEIC and AVIF are accepted; 12MB per file.
- Clarified: watermarks of any type, including ownership attribution, aren't allowed.
- Sources: eBay Picture policy, Adding pictures to your listings
How the checker measures
- The pure-white check now reads the image edges at full resolution.
- "Snap background to white" now changes only near-white pixels connected to the image border, so white parts of the product are left alone.
- Estimates (frame fill, shadows, added marks) say "check by eye" when they find nothing, instead of showing a pass.
